Neue "allegro" Musikdatenbank mit MARC-Daten
--------------------------------------------

"allegro" Music Database of USMARC records 1997.02.24
------------------------------------------
Short guide
This new database consists of some 40.000 USMARC records, obtained by
downloading from various OPACs over the Web. All the most prolific
composers are heavily represented with books, scores, and sound recordings.
There are these indexes (all of them browseable):
1: PER Persons
2: CUT Composer: Uniform titles
3: TWD Title keywords
4: TIT Titles (240, 245, 700$t)
5: SER Series titles
6: KWD All keywords from all fields (100 - 8XX)
7: CLA Classification (Dewey)
8: CNR LC Call Number
9: CTN Control numbers
There are two ways to access it:
1. Index-based access (best for browsing)
---------------------
telnet 134.169.20.3
opac
opac
mm
What you see is the index 2 at "mozart, wolfgang amadeus: symphonies"
You get elsewhere by just entering another name.
Or you can use Ctrl+n / Ctrl+p for Next/Previous page.
Press ? to get help for all other functions.
Try Ctrl+i 6 to get into index 6, for example.
2. Menu-driven access (ordered result sets possible)
---------------------
telnet 134.169.20.3
opac
opac
mc
Here, every menu guides you to what keys will do what.
The find command can be entered from index and short title menus,
and it works like this:
You enter f [Enter]
then for example per mozart? and kwd sympho?
to get the result set of all titles containing Mozart as person AND
"sympho..." somewhere in the record.
This will be around 390 records. You get the first 10, in no order.
You press o to get it ordered, then the position number in the short
title list (a ruler appears to aid you) where you want the sorting
to be done. Enter 1 for a title sort, 60 for a date sort. Then 'a'
for ascending or 'b' for descending.
On all displays, 'n' is for "next", 'v' for previous 10 lines.
Successive 'x' [Enter] gets you back to the main exit.
Ctrl+c will immediately abort.
To get out of Braunschweig: enter "exit" at the $ prompt.
Error Messages?
If you get error messages about your terminal, try setting it up first
like this: (before you enter mm or mc again)
TERM=vt100 [Enter]
or
TERM=ansi [Enter]
either one may or may not work, depending on your telnet emulation.
Other settings probably won't.
For your information:
This system was not specifically programmed for music cataloging.
"allegro" is a general-purpose database system capable of handling
USMARC records as well as other structures. A setup was made to accomodate
and index MARC music data. This setup could easily be adapted to other
needs. Nothing is hard-wired in the software, but all setups can be
changed on-site.
